Sustainability
Both Bahrain Bay’s location and the region’s climate present a number of challenges which need to be addressed in order to ensure both the economic and environmental sustainability of the development.
Therefore a great deal of planning and thought is being applied to a number of key areas. At the heart of this is the ambition to be a “Smart City" with an infrastructure which supports this aim.
In a country like Bahrain where energy consumption is high - around ten times the amount used by Japan – any steps which can limit it are welcomed. Bahrain Bay is therefore designed to save energy in every possible way.
For example, the use of a centralised cooling system providing air conditioning across the whole development is far more economical and energy efficient than individual buildings using their own plants.
Alternative energy sources are also being considered. A feasibility study is being carried out to assess the potential for wind power to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in the kingdom.
Naturally, all the projects within Bahrain Bay are also being constructed with energy efficiency as a key consideration, using locally sourced materials wherever this proves feasible.
However, there is a broader vision at play. The aim is to extend the sustainability to encompass environmental, economic and social issues as one. In doing so the ambition is to create a community which, from its very first days will form an important legacy for the whole Kingdom of Bahrain.
