The Masterplan

The Bahrain Bay development follows a distinctive and well-considered masterplan designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merril (SOM), an internationally renowned practice with over 65 years’ experience and a portfolio which includes over 10,000 projects in over 50 countries.

The vision and planning process began in 2005 and the masterplan was completed in June 2006 with work starting on the development a month later.

The masterplan consists of an island connected to the mainland by two road bridges which create a spectacular central harbour for both leisure and commercial vessels. The island itself is modelled on concentric circles divided by two intersecting axes and a canal.

The projected total floor area will be 1.45 million sq. m. and the development is due for phased completion from 2012.

The Bahrain Bay master plan is divided into seven key zones:

  • Zone 1: The South Marina Water Residences and Yacht Club with serviced apartments
  • Zone 2: South Green Park offering a hotel, residential, entertainment, leisure and retail amenities
  • Zone 3: Ocean Front West Coast Community with waterfront and commercial properties
  • Zone 4: Marina and Canal Townhouses with mixed-use retail amenities
  • Zone 5: Residential and commercial neighbourhood with retail amenities
  • Zone 6: Ocean Front North Coast Community with commercial, residential and educational facilities
  • Zone 7: North Tower offering business properties
